A Lifestyle Maternity & Newborn Family Session in the Heart of the High Country
This Boone, NC family session was the first chapter in my dear friend Allison’s Bump to Birthday journey, a full-service photography experience designed to preserve the entire first year of baby’s story. Not just in a gallery, but as memories you can hold onto for years to come.
There’s something extra special about the families I get to photograph again and again; getting to meet them before their baby arrives, document those first sleepy newborn days, and then watching that tiny baby grow right in front of my camera. It’s even more special when you’ve known mom & dad since high school.
Photographing families in the mountains of Boone North Carolina makes my job feel especially nostalgic. I grew up in these mountains. They’re my home.
Whether we’re documenting a Saturday morning in your home, wandering through an open field, or we’re hiking one of the many trails along the Blue Ridge Parkway, there are so many places that allow your family to simply be together.
A Boone Family Photography Session that Started 15 Years Prior: From Friends, to Bump, To Baby, & Beyond

The Taylor’s story with me actually started long before this session.
Flashback to the year 2009, I met Allison for the first time in the hallways of Watauga High School through our mutual friend Ansley. The 3 of us became great friends and despite us all having moved away from our home town after graduation, we’ve kept in touch ever since. Watching her family grow over the years has been one blessing of social media, so when she reached out to me about photographing this season before her family of four becomes five, I was overjoyed and honored!
This is exactly why I love offering my clients a full-service Bump to Birthday experience. Pregnancy has a way of slowing you down (both literally and figuratively). The quiet grace in the way you move, the way you naturally rest your hands on your belly for comfort, and the light that radiates in anticipation for the journey to come. Then there is the tender, sleep-deprived sweetness of the newborn trenches. The little bumps along their face, the nooks and crannies that make up their floppy arms and legs, the milk-drunk smiles while they dream away on your chest.
All the little details that feel like everyday life today become the details you’ll desperately crave to remember later.
These are the memories of your legacy. They deserve more than an expired gallery link.

For Allison’s maternity session, her father’s family property in Boone, North Carolina served as the perfect place to document her growing family exactly as it is right now. The cow-pasture was cradled with a soft blue mist these mountains are known for. Her two boys walked hand in hand alongside their dad while we snapped some solo shots of Allison along the hills of the pasture. Nina and Poppy sat on the sidelines, watching their daughter make memories with her family on his father’s family land. We ended this family maternity session with some more traditional, lifestyle family shots of Allison and all her boys up on the hill next to their house. A field with the most stunning view of the mountains served as a perfect backdrop to end this session and wait for their surprise baby to make his or her debut.
Just a few short weeks later, a river-side oasis brought Allison’s newborn vision to life. I wanted to capture some traditional lifestyle photos inside their home. The living room welcomed me with the most beautiful light that I knew would be the perfect spot for baby Cal’s tiny little newborn details sprinkled among the directed family shots. Big brothers Blaine and Wyatt joined in on the love while we snapped some solo’s with mom and dad, and I even snuck a few of Nina snuggling up with her last grand baby.
Allison chose stunning, neutral summer colors that ensured she and her boys were all coordinated, but not matching perfectly for both sessions. Her lifestyle maternity session favored greens with accents of khaki for the boys and a classic white with denim look for herself. The soft neutral cream and white palette with pops of green complimented the softness of their home but made them stand out with the pretty backlighting we had for her indoor/outdoor lifestyle newborn session. Baby Cal’s custom green overalls were even “handmade with love” by Nina herself! Another nod to all the history living in the shadows of this beautiful session. Both pallets were very complimentary of the other, and despite each session having completely opposite weather, they tie the entire story together so everything looks natural and cohesive.

Then, we loaded up and went down to the river to play. Allison changed into a beautiful all white strapless gown with a slit up the side and elegant detachable maiden sleeves; a perfect parallel to the vintage white wicker bassinet we used to make her river vision come to life. Her dad even hand built a bench for them to use in the river during their session. After getting some family shots on the bench in the middle of the river, we transitioned to some solo shots with mom and dad while big brothers fished and netted for rocks and minnows in the background.
The pictures speak for themselves, so here’s a little sneak so you can see what I’m talking about.

The Legacy Continues…
Allison’s maternity and newborn sessions don’t mark the end of their story with me. It’s part of something much bigger.
Their Bump to Birthday package continues through baby Cal’s first birthday, giving us the opportunity to document his entire first year. From the anticipation of pregnancy to those first days at home and eventually the celebration of one whole year. By the time we finish, we’ll have photographs that tell a complete story.
Your baby’s first year will be a distant memory before you know it. The photographs shouldn’t be.
That’s why a Bump to Birthday experience with me is unique, sentimental, and heartfelt. We don’t focus on what your baby looked like, but what this entire season felt like, whether it’s your first or fifth baby, each new chapter in motherhood is worthy of documenting the individual story of you and your baby’s legacy. Authentic moments that are intentionally preserved: that’s the heart behind the way I approach photography. I’m not interested in giving you another folder of pretty images that lives on your computer or a gallery link you’ll forget to download. I want to help you turn the photographs we create together into tangible memories you can actually live with. An album you’ll find your kids flipping through over and over years from now. A special box of prints they’ll keep under their bed. Heirloom artwork of your favorite people smiling back at you every single day.
Family Photos that Feel Like Home

I whole-heartedly believe photography should feel like quality, authentic time together, not another thing to check off your list. Family sessions with me aren’t focused on getting everyone to stand a certain way and smile at the camera. They aren’t about perfectly matched outfits and kids with clean faces and perfect attitudes.
They’re about connection. The raw, unfiltered moments that unfold between you and your tribe each and every day. The stolen glances between you and your spouse while your kids tug and pull at you in between smiles. The way your baby sinks into your hip while you stir supper on the stove. A family tradition, documented and preserved to be passed down physically and visually, for the generations to come. The aggressive face cradles that lead to the sweetest sloppy kiss from your toddler.
All the little moments in between the “perfect” portraits always end up being the ones you love most.
And that’s one of the reasons I love serving families throughout Boone, Banner Elk, and the surrounding High Country areas. Your photographs don’t have to feel overly posed or disconnected from your everyday life. They can feel like you, just on a really beautiful (sunny, overcast, rainy, chaotic) day. I guide you every step of the way so you don’t have to worry about a thing: what to do with your hands, where everyone should stand, or whether or not your toddler is cooperating.
Your only job is to be present in the moment with your people. Let me take care of the rest.
